This project was a lot of fun to create because I got to manipulate my voice and though I’m not one to enjoy hearing myself talk, I loved the idea of trying to piece things together. I chose to do my topic on yet again, food! And something that usually plagues and frustrates servers from time to time and that the dreaded bad tipping. I’ve been in the restaurant business now for a total of 6 years and know tend to find that I’m pretty good at catching vibes from people and knowing when they’ll leave a reasonable tip. Reasonable being 18% and above.
In effort to give everyone a optimal dining experience, I used to sweat my butt off running to get refills or would risk my neck in the name of customer service in order to get a dish redone. Serving a lot of times is a thankless job and its easy to look past your common everyday waiter or waitress, and in addition to being commonly being overlooked, a measly tip doesn’t help at all.
So while I was living in New York City I came across a restaurant that is getting rid of tipping and found that a lot of places in NYC are doing the same in efforts to avoid non tippers and create an atmosphere where the customer doesn’t have to worry about tipping enough. Danny Meyer a restauranteur living in New York City has set a new standard of putting the tips in with the food prices to avoid any non tippers. which is a genius idea especially when tips are a pivotal point of income for so many New Yorkers. to me I believe that a lot more restaurants need to adopt this method so the rest of the culinary world can catch on. This also gets rid of the dangers of servers getting robbed after work for their cash tips which happens more times than you think. The now would receive a check every two weeks. with apps and other digital currency on the market its seems that paper money is soon to be a thing of the past!
I love that you are sticking to your theme of food! Your passion and enthusiasm for the topic definitely shows in your audio story. Overall, I think your draft is very informative. One of the things I enjoy about the podcasts I listen to is how the host shares their opinions and relates it back to how it affects those around them or even them personally. I think you did a good job doing that here. One thing I would recommend for your final story is to cut out any static. There is a lot of muffled noise leading up to your intro. I did notice when I was recording audio on my cell phone there was a lot of static, making my material hard to hear. I would also love to read any additional research or your editing process! I am trying to pick up on as much as I can and glean tips from colleagues. Look forward to hearing your final story!

I think after hearing everyone’s audio, I would most definitely add music or some sort of sound effects. It’s amazing how much of a difference it makes. I specifically want to use something that relates to dining and don’t know which direction to go in just yet. At first I didn’t think of interviewing someone but now that I think about it I feel as though it’ll add a new element to my audio and also give my listeners another perspective other than mine. I like the fact of introducing the interviewer after I’ve let my audience know about the subject, similar to what NPR does. Although I didn’t use a lot of cutting, I feel like I could piece things together more coherently so that the flow of the audio makes for an easier listen. I’m honestly excited to get back to this project as I feel I have so many improvements to make and can’t wait for my finished piece.
